What’s different about cleaning in Maida Vale
Mansion-block flats are taller than they look
The blocks along Elgin Avenue, Sutherland Avenue and Randolph Avenue were built with ceilings well over three metres. That puts the tops of doors, the picture rails and the whole cornice line out of reach from the floor — and those are the first places an inventory clerk runs a finger. We bring the steps as standard. It is also why a two-bed here takes longer than a two-bed almost anywhere else in London.
Porters, lifts and signing in
Many of the blocks have a porter’s desk and a contractors’ book, and rather fewer have a lift that will take equipment. We send the name of whoever is coming the day before so nobody is turned away, and we plan for the stairs when we quote rather than finding them on the morning.
Little Venice and the canal side
The stucco houses along Blomfield Road and Clifton Gardens sit on the water, and that shows up in the work: more damp at the lower levels, more algae on the outside of the glass, and sash windows that need drying rather than just cleaning. Worth knowing before a check-out rather than after it.
