What’s different about cleaning in Highgate
Period houses, and what that costs in time
The Grove has brick houses from the 1680s and the Village is mostly Georgian and Victorian behind them. That means original floorboards with gaps, sash windows with deep glazing bars, marble fireplaces, tiled hallways and skirtings carrying a century of paint. A house here takes noticeably longer than its square footage suggests. We price on the property, not the hour, so that is our problem rather than a bill that grows on the day.
Listed and conservation-area restrictions
A lot of Highgate is listed or sits inside the conservation area, which in practice means original sash windows, lime plaster and untreated timber. We use pH-neutral products on historic timber and nothing abrasive near leaded lights or original glass. If there is something in the house you would rather we did not touch at all, tell us once and it goes on the notes.
The hill, and getting to the door
Swain’s Lane is one of the steepest roads in London and much of the Village is narrow, one-way and controlled. Several of the best addresses have no parking at the door at all. We plan for that rather than discovering it on the morning — if you can leave a visitor permit we will use it, and if not we pay, add it at cost and tell you the figure beforehand.
Deep cleans more often than move-outs
Highgate turns over slowly. Most of our work here is a weekly or fortnightly clean for people who are staying put, or an annual deep clean of a house that is lived in hard. Tenancy cleans happen, but they are the smaller half.
